On the Shovel:
Voices of the men who built Britain, telling it like it is...
Snippets from my Navvies Archive, a unique record of a vanished era. As one man wrote me:
"You told it as it was. It brought anger, sadness, and tears. It also brought back memories of pride, joy, and laughter - of men who earned their bread by the sweat of their brow."

Special limited Edition of The Men Who Built Britain

‘In the 1960s, across Britain, monuments to the labour of Irish workers could be seen throughout the cities and countryside, most particularly with the construction of the motorways but also on the building sites where Irish tradesmen and labourers were often the backbone of the workforce. Ultan Cowley gave the title to his book, The Men Who Built Britain, and it was more than an idle boast. It was a statement of pride in the reputation for industry, and the capacity for hard work, rightly earned by our people – the transient migrants.’
President Michael D. Higgins, Closing Speech of State Visit, Coventry, 9th April 2014

This iconic book was originally launched by then-Senator Michael D. Higgins in 2001.

Govt seeks expressions of interest to develop National Diaspora Centre

Monday 3rd March 2014

The Government is seeking expressions of interest from potential partners to develop and operate a National Diaspora Centre.

Following a discussion at Cabinet earlier this week, Fáilte Ireland will now make a call for expressions of interest from interested parties in order to establish whether a suitable project and partner can be found.

Any party interested in acquiring The Cowley Collection - the largest existing archive on the Irish in British Construction, as the core element in their proposal should make contact with me without delay.
